  28.                        Overview and Installation
  29.  
  30.     ImageCat 3.0 is a cataloging utility for image files stored in the
  31. PCX format used by graphics programs such as PC Paintbrush by ZSOFT. It
  32. will print or display up to 20 images at a time on an HP Laserjet
  33. compatible laser printer, an IBM Pro-Printer compatible nine-pin
  34. dot-matrix, or any standard VGA monitor.
  35.  
  36.     To install ImageCat 3.0 on your system, simply copy the imagecat.exe
  37. file on the distribution diskette to any subdirectory in your path. If
  38. you're not sure what a "path" is, then just copy the file into the
  39. subdirectory where you plan to use it.  You need no other files to use
  40. ImageCat 3.0.  (Except for the PCX files that you wish to view, of
  41. course.)
  42.  
  43.     Type imagecat to start the program.  The main screen is divided into
  44. four parts: on the extreme right and left hand sides of the screen are
  45. the File Windows.  Between the file windows, on the top of the screen,
  46. is the Path Window.  Finally, below the Path Window is a region
  47. containing five "buttons" that serve as the main menu for ImageCat 3.0.
  48.  
  49.                            "choose From" Window
  50.  
  51.     The File Window on the left side of the screen is labeled "choose
  52. From".  Note that the letter "F" in the label is capitalized.  Each
  53. label on the screen has a single capital letter in it.  Typing that
  54. letter will highlight the particular window or button associated with
  55. the label.  The highlight can also be moved using the left and right
  56. arrow keys, the <Tab> and <Shift-Tab> keys, or by clicking with a mouse,
  57. if you have one installed.
  58.  
  59.     The "choose From" File Window displays a list of files from which
  60. you can pick those you would like to view.  To select a file, you must
  61. first highlight this window.  (If you've just loaded the program, then
  62. this window is already selected.)  The highlight will appear as a light
  63. colored border around the window.  When the window is selected the
  64. cursor will appear beside one of the filenames listed within it.  (Don't
  65. panic if there aren't any files currently listed in the window -- this
  66. means that there aren't any PCX files in the current directory.  We can
  67. use the Path Window to locate files that aren't in the current
  68. directory.)  If you press the <Enter> key, the file name beside the
  69. cursor will be copied into the "To output" window, and the cursor will
  70. advance to next file name.  With a mouse, simply click on any file name
  71. to copy it to the "To output" window.  Also, if you have a mouse
  72. installed, two arrows will appear on the right hand of the window
  73. border.  If you click on these arrows the cursor will move in the
  74. direction indicated.  If there are more than twenty files listed, the
  75. file names will scroll when you try to cursor past the top or bottom
  76. edges of the window.

  78.                               "pAth" Window
  79.  
  80.     To the right of the "choose From" Window, on the top of the screen,
  81. is the "pAth" Window.  Normally this window has a blue background like
  82. the "choose From" and "To output" windows.  If you select this window
  83. and press the <Enter> key (or click in it with the mouse) the background
  84. will turn black and any text currently in the window will be
  85. highlighted.  If the first character you type is a legal DOS path
  86. character (alphanumeric, "\", "*", etc.), then the highlighted text will
  87. be deleted and that character will be inserted as the first character in
  88. a new path name.  If you press any other key, the system will beep, the
  89. highlight will disappear and you can edit the existing path.  Pressing
  90. the <Insert> key toggles typeover mode (the cursor is a large block when
  91. you are in insert mode, a small underline when in typeover mode), and
  92. the <Home> and <End> keys will move the cursor to the beginning and end
  93. of the field, respectively.  If you make a mistake, pressing the <Esc>
  94. (escape) key will abort your entry.
  95.  
  96.     The "pAth" window is used to select the subdirectory from which the
  97. files in the "choose From" Window are listed.  Type the name of the
  98. subdirectory you wish to list, and press the <Enter> key.  If there are
  99. any matching files, they will be listed in the "choose From" Window.
  100. DOS wildcard characters ("*" and "?") will be accepted as part of the
  101. filename.  If the last character is a backslash ("\") then "*.PCX" will
  102. automatically be appended to your path.
  103.  
  104.                            "To output" Window
  105.  
  106.     On the far right hand side of the screen is the "To output" Window.
  107. This is where filenames which you have selected in the "choose From"
  108. screen are listed.  If you wish to remove a name from this list, then
  109. select this window, cursor to the filename you want to delete and press
  110. Enter.  (A mouse-click will work, as well.)
  111.  
  112.                              Screen Buttons
  113.  
  114.     In the center of the screen is a group of "buttons" that perform
  115. various functions within ImageCat 3.0.  To activate any button you can
  116. type the capitalized letter in its label, move the highlight over to it
  117. and press Enter, or click on it with a mouse.
  118.  
  119.                           "output Device" Button
  120.  
  121.     The "output Device" button allows you to select where you wish to
  122. output the PCX images you have chosen.  To the right of the button, in
  123. light yellow characters, the name of the currently selected device is
  124. listed.  The possible choices are: "Display", "Dot Matrix", and "Laser".
  125. Each activation of the button toggles the choice to the next selection.
  126.  
  127.                  "Set parameters" Button and Popup Menus
  128.  
  129.     The next button is the "Set parameters" button.  Activating this
  130. button will cause one of three popup menus to appear, depending on which
  131. output device is currently selected.  Using the popups is relatively
  132. simple.  At the top is a label describing the function of the particular
  133. popup you're using, such as "Set Display Parameters".  On the left hand
  134. side in light colored characters are labels describing each piece of
  135. information being requested.  To the right of those, in dark characters,
  136. are the current values. If an item is a text entry field, then a row of
  137. fine dots appears indicating where the input field is located.  The left
  138. and right arrow keys will cycle the cursor through all of the entries,
  139. including two buttons in the bottom, right hand corner of each popup.
  140. The first button is labeled "OK", and the second is labeled "Cancel".
  141. When you are satisfied with the information you have given, highlight
  142. the "OK" button and press enter to close the popup and accept your
  143. entries; or if you wish t o exit without chan ging anything choose the
  144. "Cancel" button. Of course a mouse can be used to click on either
  145. button, as well.
  146.  
  147.                            Text Entry Fields
  148.  
  149.     The "text entry" fields work identically to the pAth Window. Select
  150. the field and press <Enter>, or click in the field with a mouse, and enter
  151. the requested text.  When you've finished, press the <Enter> key to accept
  152. your input, or the <Esc> key to reject it.
  153.  
  154.                                Pick Lists
  155.  
  156.     All fields that do not require you to enter text are "pick lists."
  157. To use a pick list in ImageCat 3.0, select it as you would any other
  158. field or button.  The background will turn dark; and, if you have a
  159. mouse installed, two small arrows will appear to the right of the field.
  160. Using the up and down arrow keys, or clicking on the small arrows on the
  161. screen will cause the field to cycle through a list of possible values.
  162. When you see the correct value, press the Enter key again, or click on
  163. the value with your mouse.
  164.  
  165.                       "Set Display Parameters" Popup
  166.  
  167.     The "Set Display Parameters" popup is the simplest of the three
  168. popups you will encounter with ImageCat 3.0.  It asks only how many
  169. images you wish to display on the screen.  The possible choices are one,
  170. four (arrayed two by two on the screen) , or twenty (five by four)
  171. files.

  174.                              Printer Popups
  175.  
  176.     The "Set Dot Matrix Parameters", and "Set Laser Parameters Popups"
  177. each contains the same fields, listed here in order:
  178.  
  179.     Send to File or Printer     picklist
  180.     Printer Port                picklist
  181.     Output Filename                text entry
  182.     Number of Images            picklist
  183.     Page Label                  text entry
  184.  
  185. o   Send to File or Printer
  186.  
  187. Two choices are provided:  "File", or "Printer".  If you choose
  188. "Printer" then your output will be sent directly to the printer when you
  189. ask for output.  If you choose "File", your output will be directed to a
  190. file that you specify for later printing.
  191.  
  192. o   Printer Port
  193.  
  194. Three choices are allowed: "LPT1", "LPT2", and "LPT3" depending on which
  195. port you have installed your printer.  You only need to specify this if
  196. you have chosen "Printer" above.
  197.  
  198. o   Output Filename
  199.  
  200. This is a text entry field used to specify the file to which  you wish
  201. to direct your output if you have chosen "File" above.
  202.  
  203. o   Number of Images
  204.  
  205. This is where you specify how many images on a page of output.  The
  206. possible choices are 1, 4, and 20. Four images will be arrayed in a two
  207. by two layout. Twenty images will be arrayed on the page in a four by
  208. five layout.
  209.  
  210. o   Page Label
  211.  
  212. If you wish to specify a title for the top of your output page, this is
  213. where you can do so.
  214.  
  215.                              Output Button
  216.  
  217.     Below the "Set parameters" button is the "Output" button. Selecting
  218. this button will cause the system to ask you if wish to display or print
  219. the currently selected files (depending on the output device).  If you
  220. have no files selected, then a message will appear informing you of
  221. this.
  222.  
  223.                          "Page 20 images" Button
  224.  
  225.     Next is the "Page 20 images" button.  This provides a convenience
  226. function,  allowing you to automatically select the next 20 files in the
  227. "choose From" window, and advance the cursor to the first file following
  228. those twenty.
  229.  
  230.                               "Quit" Button
  231.  
  232.     The last button is the "Quit" button.  If you select it, you will be
  233. asked if you really do intend to exit the program now.
  234.  
  235.                        Other Functions and Hints
  236.  
  237.     One function that does not appear on the screen is the "Redraw"
  238. function.  If for some reason the ImageCat 3.0 screen loses integrity
  239. (the most likely reason for this is DOS' "Abort, Retry" message) type
  240. the letter "R" to clean the screen up.
  241.  
  242.     As a final hint -- if you are processing files on multiple floppy
  243. disks, a simple way to read the directory of the next disk is to select
  244. the "pAth" window and press <Enter> twice.  ImageCat 3.0 will then
  245. update the choose From window to reflect the contents of the current
  246. floppy.
  247.  
  248.
